Do you know God wants to speak languages through you? Do you know that a devotional spiritual language could profoundly impact your whole life?
In Scripture there is an invaluable divinely relational resource available to the believer, which at its core, is a pure phenomenon! This phenomenon is both mysterious and miraculous. Today’s topic is on “spiritual languages,” or more to the nomenclature of the Bible, “speaking in unknown tongues.” There are several occasions in the Book of Acts where we see the early church believers communing with God through this blessed and bonding medium.
“Speaking in unknown tongues” can be an inflaming topic that conjures up a plethora of images. For some people, those images are intensely positive and grace-filled. For others, the images are polar opposites, images of excessive, weird, and crazy outbursts of expression.
All believers can agree that the first century Christians had a phenomenon of “tongues,” or “spiritual languages,” that was powerful, miraculous, and beautiful. Fundamentally, to “speak in unknown tongues” meant that a believer spoke in languages of "men and angels" (1 Cor 13:1), as the Holy Spirit supernaturally gave them the inspired utterance. It was a distinct communication directly to God (1 Cor 14:2). It was a means for expanded worship to God (Acts 2:11). It was a means for the first century believers to pray out God’s plan for their lives and the church (mysteries) (1 Cor 14:2). It was a means for building up, charging, and edifying oneself spiritually (1 Cor 14:4). It was a means for a spiritual refreshing and spiritual rest (Is 28:9-12). And it was so much more. It was so profoundly important that early church leaders—the Apostles—would say things like this:
● 1 Corinthians 14:18 (KJV) I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
● 1 Corinthians 14:5 (KJV) I would that ye all spake with tongues…
● 1 Corinthians 14:39 (KJV) Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
So really? What would it be like to speak in this supernatural utterance?
Words like “miraculous,” “phenomenal,” “tongues of fire ”and “utterance given by the Holy Spirit” can conjure up uncertain ideas, many of which could be incorrect.
To speak in unknown tongues is actually very normal and ordinary, in the same way being led by God's Spirit is. The prompting is as subtle as the nudge you get to share your faith with a friend; nothing dramatic, just a still small urging. You then have to speak out the faith-prompted inner thoughts. At first it feels similar to the reticence of sharing your faith or witnessing to a friend. Everything from fear to vulnerability and the stoic desire to not appear foolish rushes into you. When you are initially seeking the promptings by the Holy Spirit to speak an unknown tongue, you sense Him subtly urging you to speak a syllable, and to say a phrase of syllables. Once you step in faith, you have that utterance to access again on demand. The Spirit is ready to give you the utterance even now.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord God, I desire You and ALL of You. I ask you to fill me with Your Holy Spirit fresh and new right now. I ask you to give me the courage and insight to speak in these “unknown tongues” or “spiritual languages.” My part is to trust You to make a language out of the syllables I am prompted to speak; Your part is to make the language the “tongues of men and angels.” Help me to yield my thoughts and tongue fully to the Holy Spirit. I receive. In Jesus’ Name.

DECLARATION:
I yield my tongue to the Holy Spirit and therefore He is taming it (Jas 3:8). He is helping me to bridle my tongue and therefore setting the course of my life (James 3:4). I am confident that my God can take the promptings of my spirit to speak languages I have never learned (Acts 2:4). I will speak and the Holy Spirit will make a language out of it (Acts 2:4). I will speak of the wonderful works of God as I do (Acts 2:11).
